Commuter Knitter - Episode 40 - This is Newtown, This is Our Town

In this week's emotional episode, I thank you all for your love, support, prayers, and virtual hugs for my town as I express my thoughts about the tragic events that took place in my hometown of Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012.  Links to some of the places/causes I mention: The Flagpole The Newtown Bee The General Store Edmond Town Hall Ferris Farm Creamery Bagel Delight United Way Sandy Hook School Support Fund 600 Monsters Strong for Connecticut Wall Hanging for Newtown Knitters for Newtown Check out this episode!

Thank You

On behalf of our little town, I say a heartfelt THANK YOU for your prayers, love, well wishes, virtual hugs and support that you have sent our way in the wake of Friday's events.  The love pouring in from listeners via Ravelry, Twitter, email, and the blog is extraordinary - I can barely keep up with your messages.  Knowing that so many of you around the world are thinking about us gives us comfort. Yesterday was another difficult day as we learned the names of the 26 victims.  Twenty children and six educators.  In a small town such as ours, we all either know one of the individuals or know someone who does.  I am in the latter camp as one of the teachers was my mom's former co-worker. Today we await the arrival of President Obama for an interfaith vigil that will be held at the High School for the families and those directly affected. We also found out today that an unused school building in a neighboring town will be opened for the Sandy Hook students to return to clas

My Birthday Wish

I woke up this morning in hopes that yesterday wasn't real.  That it was all a nightmare.  But I could feel my eyes still damp with the tears that wouldn't stop and knew that was not the case. Before yesterday when people would ask me where I lived, and I answered "Newtown, Connecticut", they'd follow up with "Where is that?"  Now everyone knows where Newtown is.  And for all the wrong reasons.  I wish that weren't the reality. I wish that I did not hear the constant buzz of news helicopters overhead. I wish that The Today Show, Good Morning America, and the CBS Early Show weren't broadcasting 4 miles from my house.  Or that if they were it was for something happy. I wish that there weren't 27 new angels in heaven. I wish that these innocent children & educators did not die in vain. I wish that there is real change in this world as a result of yesterday's events. I wish that we come to live in a world where we do not fear

A tragic day in Newtown...

Hi everyone, I’ve been tweeting a bit about the events of today and as the hours go by it is still very difficult to process what has happened and put it into words. I did want to say that I truly appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers for our little town where we are all shaken and in shock. Carlos and I are off work today - he was out running errands and picking up lunch when he called around 11ish to ask if I was watching the news. He said there was a shooting at Sandy Hook School. I must admit that I didn’t believe him at first, but turned on the TV to see that he was right. At this time we were only being told that the shooter was dead and 3 others were injured and being treated at the hospital. I broke down almost immediately and couldn’t stop crying. I called my dad to see if he had heard from my mom who works in another elementary school in town. While I was on the phone with him, my mom called my dad and he told her to call me. She couldn’t talk long, but did assu

Hurricane Sandy

Thank you all for your thoughts and support during Hurricane Sandy. Carlos and I made it through OK. No damage to the house other than a few tree branches to pick up. We lost power on Monday evening, but it came back yesterday. Our Internet and TV are out today, but we'll deal. As you may know, there are many others in Sandy's path who did not fare so well. As knitters, crocheters, and crafters, often our first instinct is to ask, "What can we do?" If you would like to help, Maria from the Subway Knits Podcast has started a fundraising effort with some prize drawings for those who choose to participate. For a minimum of $5 donation to the charity of your choice, you will receive an entry into the drawing by sending Maria your receipt and posting in her group. Since I'm posting this from my phone, I'm not sure whether I can link directly, but the information on how to enter can be found on Maria's blog: http://subway-knits.blogspot.com/2012/10/hurrica
